Summary: | The perception of Singapore’s thriving economy automatically conjures up images of the city-state’s bustling central business district, with towering skyscrapers and modern office buildings closely associated with the nation’s success. What people often overlook are smaller home-based businesses, which have been largely ignored by the nation’s authorities when planning economic policies. Though there has been a concerted push at developing a strong core of small-medium enterprises, Singapore appears oblivious to the home business culture that has slowly developed and which now occupy a niche in the heartlands. However, there has been a belated acknowledgement of the role that home businesses can play in supporting traditional industries, and the appreciation of the need for a better work-life balance has seen home-based work increase in popularity. Hence, we shall examine the current state of home businesses in Singapore, and explore the motivations and concerns of these resourceful individuals. |
