Summary: | An accidental viewing of a Japanese anime in 2002 renewed my passion and love for art and got me interested in the Japanese culture and language. Almost 8 years later, I had the fortunate opportunity to participate in an undergraduate academic exchange to Japan. The experiences there have led me to this Cross Disciplinary Final Year Project (FYP).
I see this chance of working on a cross disciplinary FYP as another medium to tell a story – which I believe to be the core of most animation shorts. The skills and knowledge that I have learnt from my major have led me to be more experimental and fine art in my approach towards my works. Therefore I feel that a hands-on, ‘back to basics approach’ is the best way to express this project. The method of silk screening will allow me to achieve a textured and highly personal work. The step by step working method resembles my journey of self discovery – it requires time and effort, and subjects the FYP to unpredictability.
The main theme of this FYP is “Self-Discovery”. During the period of time spent in a foreign land, I have encountered many wonderful experiences, all of which had broadened my perspectives on life in general and made me discover more about myself as an individual. This is a personal research project, through which I hope to show my growth as an individual and as an artist, and it is a tribute to my ongoing and lifelong ambition to become an artist and as a tribute to Japan. |
