Description
Summary:This report presents a solution to industry-specific problem of inefficiencies by developing a new layout design for comparison with the existing one. The methodology used to develop the alternate layout is based on a systematic layout planning procedure. Using the computer simulation software, the existing and proposed layouts are modeled for evaluation. The results have shown improvement in idling time, total distance travelled by operators and the number of output produced for the new layout. Through more in-depth analysis, it is found, and later discussed, that factors such as machines capability and inter-arrival time of components also influence the efficiencies. With a machine capable of handling more than one component at a time, it proves to be more efficient than those that can only process one workpiece at a time. Furthermore, with increased inter-arrival time of components, the machines will spend less time idling waiting for job to arrive. All in all, the project achieved the objective of providing solution for decision making on best process flow and plant layout. In addition, new design was also generated based on a customized systematic layout procedure for comparison with existing layout plan. Lastly, recommendation for future work was also presented.
