Description
Summary:Being a slave meant being property to someone else, to give up all things which are personal and be at the complete mercy of the slave holders. Marriage was allowed for certain slaves, yet even these were rarely conducted in churches or officiated by ministers. For my final year thesis, I would be focusing on slave marriages in 19th century America. Marriage, which is supposed to be the tie that binds two people together, more often than not fails to perform this role when it came to marriages between slaves. I believe that instead of simply giving the assurance to slaves that a marriage can aid in alleviating the tortures of slavery, slave marriages also served to tie the slaves tighter within the binds of slavery.
