Summary:In geotechnical engineering, residual soils have been of great concern in recent years. This is mainly due to more developments being built on residual soils. One important characteristic of residual soils is its unsaturated nature and the existence of negative pore-water pressure. This project aims to provide a better understanding of the settlement behavior of unsaturated residual soils. In this study, residual soil specimens were reconstituted using three different consolidation pressures. Pressure plate tests were also conducted to impose five different matric suctions in the specimens and to obtain the soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC). This was followed by a series of constant rate of strain (CRS) tests on residual soils of different matric suctions. The test results obtained were compared with test results obtained using the increment load (IL) test.
