Summary: | Data centers are special facilities that house various equipments such as computers, servers, racks and related IT hardware. They are used to store, manage, process and exchange digital data and information. Applications include web hosting internet, intranet and information technology. Given that data centers can consume up to 100 to 200 times more electricity as much as standard office spaces; there is now a need to formulate new data center strategies to reduce the energy required by the data center.
The aim of the project was to find the important parameters that affect the air management metrics of a data center. The objectives were achieved through the usage of commercial CFD software, FLUENT, to simulate conditions within the data center and the results were applied to a chosen metric to determine how the parameters affect the metric. The chosen metrics used were the Return Temperature Index (RTI) introduced by Herrlin and the Rack Cooling Index (RCI). |
