The terrorist attacks in United States of America (USA) in 2001 have highlighted to the world the importance of security. This resulted in the implementation of security initiatives, whether mandatory or voluntary. Some of the initiatives implemented in the maritime industry include International Ship and Port Facility (ISPS) Code, Container Security Initiatives (CSI), 24-hour Manifest Rule and Custom-Trade Partnership Program (C-TPAT). Though these initiatives strengthen security in shipping and port-related activities, it has affected the business performance, both positively and negatively, of shipping and port companies.Positive impacts researched include reduction in security breaches and improved reputation and improved efficiency while the negative impacts included increase in costs, increase in workload, decrease in welfare of seafarers and inefficiency. Due to the inconsistencies and incomprehensive scientific studies on the impacts of security initiatives on Singapore’s maritime industry, this study was conducted to investigate the positive and negative impacts of security initiatives and how it affects the business performance of shipping and port companies in Singapore.
