Summary:Extreme loading condition, such as fire, blast, and natural disasters may potentially cause progressive collapse when a key structural element of a building is damaged, leading to partial or total collapse of the building structure. It has been recognized that the potential for progressive collapse of a building structure can be estimated by using column loss scenarios. In this project, penultimate-external column loss scenario is selected due to its high potential for progressive collapse, since it leaves the associated beam-slab structures with a laterally unrestrained boundary condition.In this report, membrane action as one of the alternative load paths in mitigating progressive collapse is presented. The primary objective is to study the behavior and development of membrane action in laterally unrestrained RC beam-slab structure. The variables of interest in this study are the aspect ratios and slab bottom reinforcement ratios.
