Summary:Survivability, together with fault protection and restoration, is a growing area of concern with increasing interconnection of high-bandwidth optical networks (especially WDM networks). As more traffic becomes concentrated on fewer routes, the potential cost of network outage due to a fault along these routes can be severely high. In order to guarantee acceptable levels of service continuity at all times, path protection strategies can be used to protect networks against possible disruptions to their service. However, network performance will suffer as a result of the additional redundancy required in resource usage to maintain network resiliency. The performance issues related to the operation of a network which support path protection strategies form the basis of the research that is addressed in this dissertation.
