Design of structural members subjected to axial tension and axial compression using BS 5950:2000 and Eurocode 3

The report focuses on the design of bolted and welded steel members subjected to axial tension using BS 5950 and EC 3. Worked examples are used to compare the two design codes more effectively. Comparison is done on the design methods, concepts and the ease of usage.BS 5950 and EC 3 each has its own...

Description
Summary:The report focuses on the design of bolted and welded steel members subjected to axial tension using BS 5950 and EC 3. Worked examples are used to compare the two design codes more effectively. Comparison is done on the design methods, concepts and the ease of usage.BS 5950 and EC 3 each has its own methods of designing tension members however, the concept used is the same. Both codes use the same concept and method to account for bolt holes and stress concentration around them. Both codes use the same concept of effective cross-sectional area to account for eccentricity however, the methods used are different. The approach adopted by EC 3 to calculate effective cross-section is more conservative and more tedious compared to BS 5950.
