Summary: | Piled Raft foundations are often seen as a more economical and superior foundation system compared to single foundation since it takes into account contributions of both the pile and raft. As such, the individual piles within the piled raft do not have to be designed for full penetration within the soil layer. The result is a reduction in construction cost and higher performance in terms of fulfilling bearing capacity and settlement requirements.Despite its technical and economical superiority, the design process of a piled raft proves to be a complicated and tedious one due to the complex interaction between the soil, piles and raft involve. From past researches carried out, it have been seen that performance of a piled raft may also be very much affected by various geometries of the piles and the raft, such as the pile number, pile length and pile diameter. |
