Yet, in other areas such as rescue and restoration, and construction, traction devices for heavy vehicles also play an important role, because of the soft and slippery soil surface they move on. While steel traction chains meant for snow can be conveniently used for vehicles moving in mud, they remain costly, with a short lifespan and are a hassle for drivers to install them. In this project, studies were first made on the properties of soft soils and tire traction to better understand their effect on a slipping tire trapped in mud. Alternative designs were brainstormed based on new concepts that have been inspired from current products that are also used to improve traction, such as football boots for example. Special attention has also been focused on the method of installation to reduce the hassle and time required to install the new designs.
