Summary: | Multi-level inverter technology has recently transpired as a promising alternative in the area of high-power medium-voltage energy control. This report researches the various types of existing and emerging multi-level topologies such as the diode-clamped inverter, capacitor-clamped inverter and cascaded multi-level with separate DC sources. It also presents the current driving methods of these topologies, which include the square and sinusoidal pulse-width modulation. The utilization of power simulation software (PSIM) allows for these topologies to be simulated and analysis of results to be carried out. The harmonic content of these circuits are studied and analysed through the use of the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) function. This work also elaborates the use of filters and appropriate choosing of component values to suppress and minimize the harmonics. It further presents the bipolar and unipolar methods of switching for the control of the multi-level inverters. |
