With fossil fuels being limited in supply and depleting, people are looking for alternative energy sources to meet the rising demands for energy. The solution can be found in the form of renewable energy. The main advantages of renewable energy are that it is self-sustainable and has minimal impact on the environment. However, the usage of renewable energy poses a huge challenge. The variability of the power injected into the network by the renewable energy can lead to significant voltage changes within the network. The student proposes a case study, which looks into solar power generation in Singapore, with its impact on the voltage at load bus analysed. The concept, modelling, assumptions made, approach taken are discussed in this report. Factors that can affect the voltage at the load bus are discussed and their impacts analyzed. To alleviate the voltage changes, reactive power compensation is introduced. The amount of reactive power compensation needed is calculated and the capacity of the reactive power compensation determined. Methods of reactive power compensation are discussed and evaluated. The most effective method of reactive power compensation is determined.
