Description
Summary:This report is to investigate the low cost optical light sources. Three cost-effective WDM-PON architectures with low cost light sources are evaluated by simulation. This report first investigates the method of WDM-PON with RSOA. In this method, the RSOA at optical network unit (ONU) is responsible to amplify and remodulate the downlink continuous wave (CW) laser light carrying downlink signals for uplink transmissions. Secondly, WDM-PON with injection locked Fabry-Perot laser diode (FP-LD) method is studied. Part of the CW light which carries downlink data is used for injection locking the FP-LD at ONU to achieve a single longitudinal mode. The injection locked FP-LD is then directly modulated for uplink transmissions. Lastly, WDM-PON with self injection locked FP-LD technique is discussed. In this method, the multi longitudinal mode FP-LD itself can be used to achieve injection locking. Then the injection locked FP-LD is directly modulated for data transmission. Lastly, the feasibilities of the architectures are verified by a professional simulation tool, OptiSystem.
