Summary:With the vast advances in technology, there is a need for new ideas and design solutions. The body of design knowledge and the application of this knowledge to solving technical problems are expanding rapidly (Savransky, 2000). This results in a spreading need for educational institutions to teach the younger generation to be innovative and to solve technical and nontechnical problems more creatively. Effective creative problem solving requires not only creative thinking but also critical thinking. Creative thinking may start with a single question and then extend the search in several different directions, generating a wide variety of new possibilities. Also, critical thinking examines possibilities carefully by drawing ideas together towards a single goal. Brainstorming and mind mapping are popular well-known techniques used for creative problem solving. Brainstorming helps to generate as many ideas as possible for a certain topic and mind mapping is beneficially used as a second stage in brainstorming for sorting out and evaluating ideas. Such techniques, however, tends to have unpredictable and repeatable results. Most importantly, a huge range of possibilities can be missed, as it is not within the experience of the team.
