Summary:The objective of this project is to simulate and study the performance of the non-line of sight propagation links between a sea borne vessel and a land station with different obstructing ship vessels in the line of propagation using Wireless InSite. In this report, the wireless propagation mechanisms such as diffraction, reflection, and multipath are discussed. The simulation results were compared with the experimental data obtained during the sea trials to study the characteristics of the non-line of sight propagation such as diffraction, multipath, as well as the stand-off distance. It is found that the higher the height of the obstructing ship, the longer the stand-off distance. The simulation results show that multipath can be simulated and observed, and type 2 ships with tall structures results in numerous diffractions. The simulation of the non-line of sight is useful and helpful. It can predict the characteristics of wireless propagation such as diffraction, multipath, and the signal strength versus the transmitter location. The simulation can be done to study the nonline of sight propagation links in a sea to land environment where the coast line is congested with different types of ships. The simulations works can also reduce the tedious measurement campaigns that need to be performed for each different scenario. However, the simulation results should be taken for reference only as actual values might differ due to other factors.
