Experiments were conducted using a 30:1 scale water tank model of a 3-room HDB flat to investigate the dispersion of cooking emitted pollutants in typical Singaporean residential environment. A fluorescent dye was used to stimulate the cooking emitted. pollutant. Pollutant concentration was measured using a Luminescence Spectrometer. (PerkinElmer’s LS-50B). Three sampling locations were chosen: the living room, the master bedroom and another bedroom while the variables were water flow rate and outlet areas to simulate various living conditions. A parallel study was conducted using zonal numerical simulations (COMTAM) with more variables and the results of both studies were compared in the discussion. The simulated results agree reasonably well with the measurements in this project. It showed that indoor residents are particularly prone to the inhaling of contaminants via cooking potentially leading to harm. Thus it is crucial that measures should be taken to limit the spread of indoor contaminant dispersion.
