Hearing aids : building magnetic radiation systems and analysis using MATLAB via GPIB and motor controller (interface)

The ear is an amazing organ that transports sound information to our brain causing us to react in various ways. However, many a times due to exposure to noise over a long period of time, aging or heredity, hearing loss may occur. Currently, the most popular and user friendly technology used...

However, many a times due to exposure to noise over a long period of time, aging or heredity, hearing loss may occur. Currently, the most popular and user friendly technology used to reduce or solve this hearing loss is via a Hearing Aid. The final year project done in Siemens consists of two sections: Main project and Sub project. The Main project emphasize is on the Hearing Aid: Building magnetic radiation system and analysis using Matlab via GPIB and motor controller. As this is a big project, the author is assigned the part on the MATLAB GUI interface. With this interface, Siemens’s engineers are able to use the microphone to perform the measurement of the acoustic level and THD (total harmonic distortion) automatically and remotely. With both measurements taken, the quality of the Hearing Aid can be known. The report will provide information of the terms and the MATLAB script used. The Sub project is a further improvement on the current EMC (electro magnetic compatibility) filter design simulation using MATLAB GUI interface created by Siemens. With this improvement, Siemens’s engineers are able to evaluate automatically the best filter: pi filter and the best combination for the components; capacitors and inductors, in which the output attenuation level is the highest. The results from the simulation would be used to build a model for further testing. The report will provide a detailed explanation on the improvement done to the EMC simulation and Program1 which has been used to find the best filter. Both the Main project and the Sub project have successfully been completed within the allocated time period. They will be implemented in Siemens to help aid the engineers in the research and development department to further improve the current Hearing Aid.
