Description
Summary:This project focused on developing a harmonic Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system utilizing the passive SAW-based technology. RFID technology itself is the use of an RFID tag incorporated into an object for tracking and identification purpose using radio waves. Conventional RFID systems transmit and receive at a single, fundamental frequency. Hence, all background noises would be in the same frequency bandwidth with the tag return which will deteriorate the reading performance of the tag easily. Second Harmonic concept can be used to address this problem by transmitting signals at fundamental frequency and receiving at twice of the fundamental frequency to discriminate the tag return from the clutter return. Current existing SAW RFID system by RFSAW, Inc. was explored and modified to realize the proposed harmonic RFID concept. Transmitter and receiver system design were proposed, analyzed, developed and tested successfully. The overall harmonic RFID system was tested and the modified harmonic tag was successfully detected. Previous research and findings have strongly supported the feasibility of this harmonic RFID concept. Therefore, further research on the modified tag was proposed for future works as well as the alternative receiver design using surface mount devices to make the modified circuitry more compact.
