Summary:Drawing on the philosophies of art and aesthetics, including the work of Clive Bell, Susanne Langer, Denis Donoghue, Etienne Gilson and Peter Lamarque, I identify the principles of beauty most frequently associated with the literary arts and explore the means by which beauty is conveyed through language and form in Jose Saramago's novels, particularly in All the Names, The Cave and Death at Intervals. Four principles of beauty manifested repeatedly in literary works of art are artistic form, eloquent uses of language, the creation of a poetic illusion and claritas or radiance. In this thesis, I also argue for the crucial significance of an aesthetic response in approaching literature or fiction as art.
