Over the years, publishing output and export of Singapore publications overseas have also increased. However, availability of Singapore publications in overseas market or even overseas libraries was virtually unknown. The study found that 3% of the Singapore English publications published in 2007 and 2008 were owned by the identified overseas public libraries. Currently, there is no benchmark or previous studies available to determine if a 3% penetration rate of a particular country’s publications in overseas libraries is considered satisfactory. Interest in Singapore publications has yet to reach a level to encourage overseas libraries to actively source for Singapore materials. This can be seen from the frequent use of sources such as vendors/suppliers/jobbers to identify the relevant Singapore titles for libraries involved in supporting Southeast Asia research. A concerted and coordinated effort from all players in the industry is crucial for expanding the overseas market for Singapore materials.
