Large diameter bored piles are commonly used in Singapore for the support of heavy loads because of their high axial load capacity and the ease with which the required pile lengths can be adjusted. This is particularly the case when relatively stiff materials such as residual soils and weathered rocks are encountered. However, the design of bored piles in these materials are often overconservative. In an attempt to develop a rational approach to the design of bored piles in residual soils and weathered rocks of Singapore, an extensive research study was carried out.
