The Global Positioning System (GPS) is an American military satellite positioning system, with an operational plan calling for 24 GPS satellites in six separate orbital planes of 4 satellites each. The altitude is approximately 20,200 km and a 12 hours orbital period is provided. Currently, 16 satellites are launched. Each satellite broadcasts a coded signal on two carrier frequencies : L1 at 1575.42 Mhz and L2 at 1227.60 Mhz. The L1 carrier frequency is modulated at 293m and 29.3m, the L2 carrier at 29.3m only. Modulation at 293m is called the C/A code or standard positioning service (SPS) and is available to all users. The 29.3m modulation is called the P code or precise positioning service (PPS) and is intended for military usage only.
