School of Mechanical and Production Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Mechanical engineering::Bio-mechatronics 95 p. The conventional wheelchair uses a handrim propulsion system. It provides good manoeuvrability but has poor propulsion efficiency. The handrim also induces ergonomically undesirable postures and requires a relative high muscular effort to propel the wheelchair. A survey of the wheelchair users in Singapore was conducted to better understand their problems and needs. Thirty active independent users were interviewed. All of them use conventional handrim wheelchair. The survey revealed that mobility and transportation are two of the major problems faced by the wheelchair users. Many of them experienced recurring aches and pains in the shoulder and hand-wrist regions. This can be attributed to the poor propulsion and seating postures of the conventional wheelchairs. However, the handrim method is preferred by the highly athletic users for its versatility.
