Electro-discharge machining (EDM for short) is characterised by material removal produced by a series of non-stationery time-spaced electrical discharges between an electrode and a workpiece. The "cutting tool" is called the electrode but this tool never touches the workpiece. The electrode merely provides a platform from which the sparking originates.
