Dynamic compaction (DC) has been used widely as an effective method in improving the mechanical properties of loose sand deposits often found in reclaimed land. The process involves dropping a large pounder onto the ground surface, causing a densification of the soil as the impact stress wave propagates downward. In the case of near-saturation condition in reclaimed land, this impact stress might even produce a possible liquefaction of the sand. As not much research have been done to observe the pore-water pressure response of nearly saturated sand undergoing impact loading, the occurrence of such a liquefaction phenomena remains difficult to be firmly established.
