Strategic management theories are gradually gaining recognitions in the construction industry. This is shown by incremental efforts of researchers in exploring concepts such as competitive positioning in determining their feasibility of application to the industry. Even so, literatures that focus on the empirical analysis of strategic performance remain lacking. In recognizing the gap between the theories and empirical studies, this research is conducted to assess the performance of global engineering and construction (E&C) firms. Sixty-one large firms from various countries in the region of North America, Europe and East Asia are selected as study objects. The methodology adopted is known as fundamental analysis, where financial statements of these publicly listed firms are analyzed. For a majority of them, data are collected over a seven-year period from 1997 to 2003. A number of statistical tests are conducted to collectively assess them in four aspects, namely profitability, capital structure, liquidity and human resource management.
