In hard disk drives mechanical resonance is a pervasive problem in servo systems. Mechanical resonance always reduces stability margins, forcing servo gains down and degrading machine performance. Mechanical resonance falls into two categories: lowfrequency resonance and high-frequency resonance. High-frequency resonance causes instability at the natural frequency of the mechanical system, typically between 5000 and 18000 Hz. Low-frequency resonance occurs at 200 to 1000 Hz. High-frequency resonance occurs more often in hard disk drives. This dissertation will present methods for dealing with high-frequency resonance and also the heat impact on it, all of which are compared with laboratory data.
