Soon Ing Yann School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering DRNTU::Engineering::Electrical and electronic engineering::Electronic systems::Signal processing 94 p. Digital noise reduction processing is used in many telecommunication applications to enhance the quality of speech. This thesis focuses on the problem of single microphone frequency domain speech enhancement in noisy environments. The main characteristics of available frequency domain noise reduction algorithms are firstly presented. In this thesis, among the available single microphone speech enhancement techniques the hybrid Wiener filter and generalized spectral subtraction methods are presented. A new method, hybrid Wiener spectrogram filtering, which effectively reduces the additive background noise level, is proposed. Objective measures and examination of spectrogram plots showed that the proposed method outperformed the generalized spectral subtraction technique resulting in better speech quality and reduced levels of musical noise. Further enhancements in speech quality were achieved by applying time frequency filtering that was designed to minimize residual noise.
