A growing number of products in communication area now require high-precision analog-to-digital conversion. In addition, there are increasing requirements for emerging products to extend their features into programmable and reconfigurable applications for multiple frequency operations. Delta-sigma modulation, first proposed by Cutler and Inose in the 1950's and early 1960's, offers a more practical alternative to high-precision analog-to-digital conversion. In addition to advantages such as relaxed anti-aliasing filtering and analog building blocks requirements, delta-sigma (AE) modulation with its inherent dynamic range versus bandwidth trade-off serves as an ideal candidate for the design of a multi-standard capable analog-to-digital (A/D) interface which is adaptable to different dynamic range and bandwidth requirements.
