Despite the shared genesis and history, Chinese writers in Singapore and Malaysia have moved into divergent directions after the 1965 separation between the two countries. Situated in two different nations and political environments, Mahua (Malaysian Chinese) writers and Xinhua (Singapore Chinese) writers have experienced changes concerning national consciousness and discourses. Focusing on the four decades after 1965, this dissertation divides the study into three periods: (1) 1965-1980, a formative period in which Chinese writers explored and took up various roles towards the new nations and political regimes; (2) 1980s, a span where Mahua and Xinhua writers resisted with melancholy the supremacies of Bumiputera and English, respectively; (3) 1990-2005, while Mahua writers notched remarkable literary achievements amidst ethnic dilemma, Xinhua writers diminished despite the nation's spectacular success.
