The layer-by-layer technique has aroused great interest in the field of biotechnology as well as in nanotechnology. Lbl involves the consecutive assembly of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes on the template colloidal substrate followed by the dissolution of the core for the fabrication the hollow capsule. The capsules can be tuned by varying a number of parameters and can be functionalized with different types of macromolecules depending on the purpose. The extension of application of this technique to be employed in the drug delivery and other applications in vivo is mainly limited by two major factors, biocompatibility and stability of the microcapsules in vivo. The search for a suitable core and biopolymer pairs which are biocompatible and biodegradable have been under investigation for several years.
