This research aimed to find out the effect of complexity of Chinese characters and their pinyin on recognition time. The complexity of characters was measured by the number of strokes characters contain. And the complexity of pinyin was measured by the number of the letters pinyin consists. 200 simplified Chinese characters were selected for the recognition test. Analysis of variance using repeated measure method showed the complexity of writing and pinyin had significant impact on the recognition time of simplified Chinese characters. The recognition time was longer for more complicated pinyin or writing.
