Coronary Artery Disease (atherosclerosis) is one of the most common heart diseases. Atherosclerosis is a disorder which can result in thickening of the coronary artery wall due to building up of atheromatous plaques inside the coronary arteries that supply the myocardium of the heart. It can lead to chronic inflammatory response in the artery wall owing to the accumulation of white blood cells especially macrophage. It is promoted by high level of low density lipoprotein (LDL) (plasma protein that carries triglycerides and cholesterol) and low level of high density lipoprotein (HDL) that removes cholesterol and fatty acid from the macrophages. Eventually, the atheromatous plaques can lead to rupture forming clots inside the lumen of the artery. The clots may heal and shrink resulting in narrowing of the coronary artery or in some cases, it can completely obstruct the artery lumen. So, myocardial infarction, angina pectoris, and heart attack are the common causes of atherosclerosis. The predisposing factors for the coronary artery disease are old age, hypertension, ischemic heart disease, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes and smoking.
