Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Methicillin sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) are variants of the common bacterium Staphylococcus aureus. Its infection is highly resistant to some antibiotics and it is difficult to treat the infection. Biofilm associated infections are becoming more common. This study evaluates the amount of Biofilm formation in MRSA and MSSA with the combination of western antibiotics and phytochemicals. Biofilm formation was quantified using spectrophotometer, and the biofilm layer was visualized under scanning electron microscopy. Antimicrobial agents at their sub MIC concentrations were used to study the effectiveness against biofilm formed by MRSA and MSSA. The combination of a western antibiotic with the phytochemical was found to be very effective in inhibiting the biofilm formed by all the strains of Staphylococcus aureus studied. The individual action of the drug was found to be less effective in controlling biofilm growth than its respective combinations. Hence the combinatorial effects of the drugs were found to show high synergistic activity against all the strains of MRSA and MSSA.
