Sianandar Tam, Siu Chung Robert Stewart Boyd Nanyang Business School DRNTU::Business::Finance::Mergers and acquisitions 134 p. Media convergence through vertical integration has been the driving force behind mega media mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in recent decades. In this dissertation, the history of media M&As is traced and analyzed, which then serves as the platform to understand in depth three recent mega media M&A deals: the AOL's merger with Time Warner (completed on January 11, 2001), the NBC's acquisition of Vivendi Universal Entertainment (completed on May 12, 2004), and the Sony-led Consortium's acquisition of MGM (completed on April 8, 2005). For each of these three cases, the background of the deal, the strategic rationale of the deal participants, and the reasons for the failure or success of the deal have been presented and analyzed. Lessons learnt and overall recommendations for successful M&As pertaining to the media industry have been proposed.
