In today's highly globalised world, businesses are increasingly incorporating sustainable development practices in their operations and activities. How well an organization deals with the challenges of sustainable development can be a determinant of its future success. This paper analyses how the Royal Bank of Canada -the largest bank in Canada and one of the world's 100 most sustainable companies since 2004 - deals with the challenges of sustainable development. The study was divided into two phases. The first phase involved secondary research and identification of the challenges and strategies adopted by RBC. Two key challenges namely (1) Managing the tension between sustainable development and business growth and (2) Managing Diversity, were identified. To overcome these challenges, RBC employed their (1) Environmental Blueprint and (2) Integrated Diversity Model respectively. In the second phase of the study, these challenges and strategies were verified through an interview session with the relevant RBC personnel in Canada.
