Rajaratnam School of International Studies DRNTU::Social sciences 48 p. The Iraq war has been heavily criticised by some scholars as well as larger society. The thesis attempts to take a more critical view of the debates and criticisms. It seeks to understand the case made against the onset of the war and the faulty reasons that had been advanced by the Bush administration in starting the war. It also examines how the concepts of pre-emption and perpetual hegemony advanced by President Bush have further coloured the negative view of the US as a less-than-responsible actor in international relations. It then urges the focus of the Iraq war to be turned towards the formation of a new democratic political system in Iraq. Given the availability of political science literature on the nature of democratic processes and the credentials of the US as a mature democracy, it is argued that the US is in a good position to play this part. The other positive outcome of the Iraq war, it is argued, is to warn states such as Iran against adopting a belligerent attitude in building its nuclear arsenal. It is acknowledged that contradictions in US foreign policy behaviour have caused suspicion and mistrust of the US as a responsible superpower and this could increase the hatred of Muslim fundamentalists and Middle East society in general. Thus, a more transparent rhetoric from the US may be needed while at the same time holding off on military options wherever possible so as to increase trust in it. It is concluded that US might and ideology places it in the position of natural leadership which it should exploit through diplomatic and political pressure means as well as strategically critical negotiations rather than military options such as invasion and occupation.
