In 2007, India was criticized for continuing to do business with Myanmar's military regime as they were cracking down on peaceful protests led by Buddhist monks and civilians in Myanmar. Almost two decades earlier in 1988, Myanmar'sy'imta crushed a massive pro-democracy uprising led by Aung San Suu Kyi's party - the National League for Democracy (NLD) and refused to hand over power to the NLD even though they won the general elections by a landslide. Instead, they arrested several opposition leaders and placed Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest. India was in the forefront in condemning the junta, and the only Asian country to do so.4 The difference in India's behaviour between 1988 and 2007 was so stark.
