The United States is the number one foreign sponsor of counter-narcotics in Afghanistan. Identifying Afghanistan's opium industry as one of the most significant existential threats to the stability of Afghanistan, the US government has devised a five-pillar counter-narcotics strategy designed to eliminate opium cultivation in Afghanistan. While the absence of the rule of law, the insurgency, an inadequate infrastructure, and corruption have facilitated to the growth of the opium trade, the US' emphasis on opium crop eradication and their fallacies of alternative development have collaborated to restrain the effectiveness of drug control.
