After four decades of existence, ASEAN has always been the subject of contradictory observations over the Association's effectiveness in promoting the stability and security of Southeast Asia region. The nature of ASEAN cooperation still remains a controversial topic in international theory. The thesis aims to explain the nature of ASEAN security cooperation under the light of constructivism's security community conception. ASEAN is in fact exhibiting the characteristics of a security community, namely the absence of war, the integration and trust building process and common identity that create "sense of community" and guarantee the relative stable peace over the region. However, as a security community, ASEAN is still at nascent level. In order to attain the goal of being a more "mature" security community, ASEAN must changes its existing norms to handle more complicated security threats, including both traditional and non-traditional ones. It is obviously not an easy task for ASEAN - given the divergent strategic priorities of its member states.
