Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information DRNTU::Social sciences::Communication 136 p. This research examined the relationship between the Internet and the Singapore gay community and its implications. The nature of the Internet allows a safer and freer environment for the gay community to interact with each other, express their sentiments, and voice their opinions about homosexuality. Salient to this study is how the Internet has empowered the gay community emotionally, socially, and sexually. Areas such as changes in behavior, the effectiveness of the Internet as a communication tool, the usage pattern of the Internet, and the kind of applications that are used most frequently (and with what results) by the gay community in Singapore are dealt with. This study adopted a qualitative and quantitative combined methodology that consisted of open-ended and closed-ended written items on questionnaires, in-depth, open-ended interviews, and direct participation observation. Findings suggested that access to gay information and the use of other new communication methods among gays on the Internet has a strong impact on the gay community (in Singapore) in terms of better network communication, connections between them, and the organization of social activities. In the Internet era, being gay is not the same anymore. Master of Mass Communication 2011-12-27T08:38:37Z 2011-12-27T08:38:37Z 2011 Thesis http://hdl.handle.net/10356/47544 Nanyang Technological University application/pdf
