林晨是新加坡华语剧坛的先驱人物，身兼剧作家和导演二职，为华语戏剧的推动和发展做出了重要的贡献。他坚持创作现实主义的作品，秉持艺术“为人民服务”的信念，把毕生的精力都投注在华语戏剧当中。他的剧作语言自然生动，反映了当代的社会风气和现实社会。此外，林晨自新加坡艺术剧场成立之初就担任主要编导，而艺术剧场又是新加坡五、六十年代最具代表性的剧团，林晨功不可没。 本文将研究林晨于五十至七十年代的剧作，把他在这三十年间所创作的九个独幕剧和三个多幕剧纳入三种不同的类别：揭露生活的作品、改良社会的作品和为工农服务的作品。这三个类别的剧作都在一定程度上受到了中西思潮的影响，具有着鲜明的时代意义。本文除了归类林晨的剧作，也分析其剧作的现实主义，如何于此时此地真实地反映生活的真善美。 Lin Chen was the pioneer of Singapore Chinese theatre. He used to be a playwright and director who contributed much in developing Chinese theatre. He spent his life in Chinese theatre and persisted in realistic mode of writing with the belief of ‘Serve the People’. His plays were full of naturally vivid languages which reflected the contemporary social and social reality. Besides, Lin Chen had been the main playwright of Singapore Amateur Players which was the representative theatre of 1950’s and 1960’s in Singapore since it was established. This thesis focuses on the study of Lin Chen’s plays from the early of 50’s to 70’s and groups his nine one-act plays and three plays of many acts respectively into the categories of exploring the real life, of improving the social life and of serving the workers and peasants. These three kinds of categories which were influenced by Chinese and Western trend of thoughts possessed distinct spirit of the times. Apart from grouping Lin Chen’s plays, this thesis also analyses the realistic mode of writing of his plays and explore how they reflected the true, the good and the beautiful of the life.
