Late Ming social landscape and Zhang Dai's self image in Tao'an Mengyi
Zhang Da...

Throughout his life, he had written an abundance of works, including Tao’an mengyi. Zhang’s Tao’an mengyi has eight volumes and a total of 123 xiaopinwen. Tao’an meng yi was a compilation of various memoir-like passages as he wrote about his life back in late Ming. Just as what he wrote in the preface of this book, this book is not organised and categorized in chronological order. Therefore, it looks complex as it involves numerous contents. However, we can organise it into six subjects: description of landscapes, of folk customs, of craftsmen, of story teller and actors, of art appreciation and appreciation of tea and gourmet. In this project, I would firstly analyse the book title, “Tao’an”, “meng” and “yi”. By using the method of Close Reading, I would analyse the social landscape of late Ming and his self-image in Tao’an mengyi. Zhang Dai expressed his recognition and yearning towards late Ming society through the depiction of late Ming society. |
