Summary:A red 12H-pyrazino[2',3':3,4]pyrrolo[1,2-a]perimidin-12-one, probe 2, reported is a multi-metal ion recognition sensor in water. 2 is a selective colourimetric sensor for Cu2+, Hg2+ and Ag+ with “turn-on” fluorescent recognition for Fe3+. The colourimetric and fluorescent changes, which takes place within 15 minutes of reaction time, facilitates the detection of the presence of these cations by the naked eye. Thus, 2 has a wide range of applications that can be of aid to the environmental and medical industries in the detection of these heavy metal ions.
