Summary: | This report suggests the replacement of the current instrumental cluster (known as a dashboard in this report) with an electronic dashboard in mobile vehicles.
The traditional dashboard serves only a functionality which is to inform the driver on vehicle status. We propose the use of a multiple function dashboard that incorporates a vehicular information, entertainment, security, and warning system. It also provides the user the option of customizing their dashboard with respect to widget placing, size and colour. All graphics in this report are designed by the author to cater to the needs
of the various functions and user groups, namely the elderly and people with colour deficiency.
Empirical data from a range of research on vehicle safety and human behavioural studies shows that problems faced by drivers are mainly related to speeding and distraction. Graphics and colours are used to alert and warn drivers of potential accidents. A dynamic speedometer is suggested to address the problem of speeding. Our design also incorporates features which make the interface friendly for the elderly and those with colour vision deficiency. A user centric design is adopted to enhance driver experience by presenting only crucial information on the dashboard in a low clutter, high contrast setting.
The adaptation of this design is strongly believed to enhance overall road safety of the driver through a multi-pronged approach to address speeding and distraction. With increasing mobility and emphasis on safety, an electronic infotainment dashboard is a novelty and can have a strong influence on consumer purchase decision. |
