Summary:This project aims to study the resource allocation issue in WiFi network, considering the case that different users may have different transmission rates. In addition, theoretical analysis of the impact of the multi-rate on the performance will be investigated as well. WiFi is a mechanism that allows electronic devices to exchange data wirelessly over a computer network. WiFi is a trademark of the Wi-Fi Alliance and the brand name for products using the IEEE 802.11 family of standards. IEEE has standardized the 802.11 protocol for Wireless Local Area Networks. The primary medium access control (MAC) technique of 802.11 is called distributed coordinate function (DCF). DCF is a carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) scheme with binary slotted exponential backoff. There are two packet transmission schemes employed by DCF: the basic access and the RTS/CTS access mechanism. In this report, detailed information of the IEEE 802.11 family will be discussed first, followed by the means of building and running a simulation program. The throughput performance of both access mechanisms will be presented and discussed.
