Summary: | Distributed virtual environments systems are used to allow multiple users to communicate and interact with each other through different networks of connected workstations in a shared virtual world. In recent years, due to the enormous growth of multiplayer games development in the entertainment industry, this type of systems has become increasingly popular.
However, one of the problems faced in these systems is the experiencing of packet loss by the network. As this measurement is the key element to providing acceptable quality of service for the users, any packet loss must be properly handled and compensated for to provide a smooth experience.
Therefore, the objective of this project is to demonstrate on how distributed virtual environment can be handled using the software TORCS by creating a prototype running on a human or computer-controlled client to log traces of entity states in order to study on their performance. In addition, client-server architecture of TORCS will also be constructed to facilitate the comparison of different approaches to handle these problems so that whenever the state of an entity changes in the virtual world, these updates can be delivered reliably to the clients in real time to keep their local presentations consistent.
In this report, the author will include a brief introduction of the project that is undertaken by her and an overview of the job scope. It will also include the details of the work done that is created during her journey on working on the project.
At the end of the report there will also be a summary that shares more about the experience the author had when developing on this project. |
