Converting normal computer screens into 3D displays using parallax barriers

Due to the growing trend of 3D entertainment and advertising, there has been an increasing interest in 3D TVs and monitors. However, most solutions on the market are quite expensive and can involve additional costs for 3D glasses. The aim of this study is to design an inexpensive, glasses-free 3D di...

However, most solutions on the market are quite expensive and can involve additional costs for 3D glasses. The aim of this study is to design an inexpensive, glasses-free 3D display. The method chosen for creating an auto-stereoscopic display was that of Parallax Barriers as they can easily be replicated using OHP transparencies and normal inkjet or laser printers. Through the course of the study it was found that the success of the experiment hinges on how accurate the printer is because the barrier needs to have a very fine and precise vertical grating. By scaling the base image and the barriers by a factor of 4, the need for precision was reduced and stereopsis was finally achieved. At the culmination of the project, it can be concluded that finer and less obtrusive barriers could be created given a printer of higher quality. Recommendations are also provided on how the existing barriers could be improved upon without upgrading to higher quality printers.
